Cradle - Land and the German Ancestors

The cradle-land of the family, like so many Dutch-Catholic middle-class families, is in the former Earldom of Lingen. This former Earldom is situated in the North West of Germany on the equal latitude of our own (Dutch) county of Overijsel, between the Overijsel east border and Lingen's west border is the short distance of approximately twenty kilometres. The most northerly point of Lingen is situated at the same latitude as Gramsbergen, the furthest south the same latitude as Enschede. With the exception of a very small area in the extreme north-west, the entire Earldom is situated to the east of the River Eems, approximately between the tributaries Hase and A. It is subdivided into a westerly situated Neder-Lingen (Lower Lingen) and a smaller, more easterly situated Opper-Lingen (Higher Lingen), together approximately the same size, like half the county of Utrecht. In Neder-Lingen, situated on the Eems, is the old capital of Lingen. A former establishment town with presently over 11,000 inhabitants, in type similar to the east-Dutch towns of Oldenzaal and Aalten of Borculo.

The Schulten family originate from Neder-Lingen. Neder-Lingen is mostly flat land, partly covered by forestry and over the centuries formed mostly by heather and sand-drifts. At present it is almost completely cultivated. The traveller in Neder-Lingen will realise very soon that it is a very prosperous area that reminds us of our own Achterhoek of Overijsel.

However, in the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries it was very poor, like most of Westfalen, like the counties of Drente and Twente and like a large area of our generalisation. Like in Twente and Achterhoek, the standard of living was quite poor. It was prevalent, like in our own Twente and Achterhoek, that welfare was backward.
Like in many German states, the lands were mostly owned by the king, the "father" of the land. The inhabitants were indebted to this "father", apart from kindness, high taxes and many slavery duties. Like so many German miniature states, Lingen was ruled by selfish civil servants of a king living abroad, whose interests in the land did not concern him as long as the taxes increased.

About 1550, Neder-Lingen contained apart from the town, nine villages or parishes. In the vicinity of Suttrup-Under-Thuine, one of these villages, in 1604, lived the oldest forefather known to date, Herman Schulten. Thuine is situated approximately twelve kilometres to the east of the capital Lingen. The parish of the village of Thuine contained in those times, apart from the village of Thuine, where the church was, also the hamlets of Brumsel, Messingen, Sutterper of Suttrup (now Suttrup) and Loe or Loo (now Lohe). Suttrup is situated approximately five kilometres to the south east of Thuine. Both Thuine and Suttrup are very old, the parish of Thuine was mentioned in the year 800 AD, in the time of Karel den Grooten (Charles the Great). The present church was built in 1522. All the ancestors mentioned in the family tree were born in this parish of Thuine and were christened in this church.

As mentioned above, the oldest forefather lived in Suttrup in 1604. In a statistic book "Lagerbuch der Grafschaft Lingen vom 1550" there is no mention of the name Schulten, so the family of Schulten must have settled in Suttrup between 1550 and 1604.

Regarding where the family lived before is a mystery. According to the afore-mentioned book, in Thuine itself in 1550, lived a Herman Schulte and in the parish of Lohe, a Johan Schulte. Lohe is situated only one kilometre from Suttrup and it is tempting to conclude that the Schultens of Suttrup are descended from the afore-mentioned. We need to beware not to take conclusions too quickly because turning the pages of the Largerbuch we soon discover the name Schulten in those years in the Earldom were spread out far and wide. Every parish had one or more families of the name of Schulten. There is no certainty to conclude from where the Schultens came to Suttrup. However, it is very likely that the Schultens did not originate from outside the parish of Thuine of Suttrup, because in those days farming communities rarely moved from one parish to another.

According to our documented recorded derivation, Suttrup can claim the oldest rights. Herman Schulten, who lived there in 1604, was a small tenant of the Lord of Lingen. His business was nothing too grand. Almost the entire population were farmers who had to work very hard to make a living out of the poor soil. They grew rye, linseed and their cattle/livestock consisted of some pigs, goats, sheep and hens. The majority of the population were responsible towards the Lord eg. the duty to ask permission of the Lord for legalities, the duty to assist the Lord, like helping with the haymaking and the harvest.
The economic situation in the Earldom was very bad. In the beginning of the nineteenth century, about fifteen per cent of the inhabitants needed to seek work outside the Earldom, like in the rich Holland of old.

Also the children and grandchildren of Herman Schulten lived under similar circumstances. We know that especially in the seventeenth century in the catholic Earldom, there raged a fierce religious persecution, we can imagine what difficult lives these people had.

The available space here leaves us no further description of the situation of the situation in the cradle-land in earlier centuries. See:

Another short note about the family name. The name Schulten is part of a group of professional names; these are names derived from civil service ranks, professions, industries and crafts. In this case the sheriff. The sheriff was the representative of the Lord in the village and had jurisdiction. The word jurisdicture in the broadest sense included legislation and rule like jurisdiction. In West Germany and Drente, the sheriff was called Schulte. In the counties of Overijsel and Gelderland,he was called Scholte, in Brabant called Scholtis and in mid and south Germany was called Schultheiss. The family names, Schulte or Schulten, Scholte or Scholten, Schouten and Schultheiss all have the same meaning. May we now conclude that the family name was derived from a forefather who was once a sheriff? However, since the family already had a name before 1600, it could be concluded that the name originated from another forefather who was a tenant of a Schulte or Schout and therefore named after his farmstead, which in this case was a "Schultehof", (hof meaning garden). Especially in Saksische parts (and Lingen is part of this), it was from old the custom to derive the family name from the name of the estate.

To conclude, some remarks about the cradle itself. The oldest statistics were taken from legal documents from the state archive in Osnabruck Staatsarchiv at Osnabruck). Furthermore, the church records of the parish of Thuine were consulted. The marriage registers began in 1685, the baptismal records in 1738 and the burial registers from 1738-1752 and further from 1815.
For the ancestors born in the Netherlands, the registers from the registration service were used of the parishes concerned and the time period before 1 March, 1811, (the introduction of the registration service in the northerly part of the country) (the Netherlands), the church records. Before 1811 we had to rely on the church registers.

Until the last mentioned period, the manner of writing the name and Christian names have been taken from the Christening and marriage registers and, failing this, from registration documents. The places and dates of marriages after 1811 were taken from civil marriage registers.
